I found this to be amusing and since the kids are goofing off I thought I'd share. I've always been a skeptic of the first person walking on the moon. I'm convinced Kona ("the big island") was Neil Armstrong's actual landing -fooling us all! Also, recalling my 3 previous trips to Hawaii (Maui, Oahu & Kauai), I never noticed Elvis Presley shirts in any of the gift shops. However, Kona frequents many style's of Elvis shirts...HUM, the light in my head began to flicker, remembering Elvis' old movies.
Halemaʻumaʻu Crater is a 165-metre deep crater within Kīlauea Caldera, as of 2009.
Now that I'm back home, this is where I take part on a little online search: Not only did Elvis make three movies in Hawaii (Blue Hawaii, Girls Girls Girls and Paradise, and Hawaiian Style) he also came to Hawaii for live performances, the one most well known being the show on January 14, 1973 telecasted world-wide as "Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii". He had visited Hawaii numerous times beginning in the late 1950's, and his last visit in March 1977, coincidentally dieing that same year in August.
This gets better: The book Elvis and the Blue Moon Conspiracy by Mark McGinty tells the satirical story of the 1969 moon landing, where Presley accompanies astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the lunar surface and becomes the first man to walk on the moon. An accident on the surface causes NASA to abort the mission and broadcast a version of the landing without Presley, later dubbed a "hoax" by a little known reporter named Dani Mitchell. According to the fictional story, Presley dies in 1969 but is replaced by an impersonator who lives out the rest of Presley's life.
Therefore asking myself the question: How many people have walked on the moon?
The Answer: Twelve astronauts have walked on the moon, the last in 1972.
With all the latest technology, why has NASA failed to land since? I don't know, maybe because... "The Big Island" [Kona] in the early 1900s were years of relative peace and quiet. Since 1941, Hawaii was thrust onto the world stage with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu. The postwar years saw tremendous growth and economic development. In 1959, Hawaii was admitted to the Union as the Fiftieth State. In 1977 an estimated 31,000 resident population, encompassing 4,028 square miles. You can only imagine how much less the population was in 1969 (walk on the moon).
As for Elvis, some believe he is still alive - Kona having the last laugh on all of us? Maybe.
Anywho - this post is longer than I had anticipated. I hope it was as interesting to you as me. If not - why haven't you stopped ready?
