During our search for a restaurant Friday late afternoon, we drove past the Monarch Butterflies of Pismo Beach, we could see the beautiful orange colors flying through the grove. Pismo has the largest aggregation of Monarch butterflies in the U.S., from late October to February, daily walks through the grove allow you to see the butterflies cluster in the limbs of Eucalyptus trees at Pismo State Beach - seeking shelter from the freezing northern winters. Unfortunately we didn't have time to actually go on one of their daily walks through the grove. We were so darn hungry!!! The town menu's do not cater to children under 5. We must have walked into every restaurant on Pomeroy Street, finally settling at The Splash Cafe. Actually, this happened to be - The World Best “Homemade From Scratch” Clam Chowder, Honest!!! Apparently, the Pismo Clam is one of the largest types of clams found along the California Coast. Later, Todd & Martina mentioned that the cafe sells the clam chowder frozen to take home - which they did so, to eat Sunday night at home.

Saturday morning's weather was awesome! Dune buggies, quads, and 4x4s surrounded the beach - one of the only places in California where you can actually camp on the beach, with your vehicle!!
Crusin' right on the beach at sunset, pitch your tent anywhere, listen to the waves, and cruise 8 miles of towering sand dunes - this reminds me of why I could never move out of California (even though their politics are driving me CRAZY). Had I brought my own motorcycle helmet, gloves and doc martens, I too may have been gutsy enough to take one of the (kids) quads for a ride. Brian couldn't get enough of riding - but had enough by night fall. He forgot his gloves, his helmet, and his boots at home (had to borrow gear) - and was hurting the next morning. Hands a wee bit swollen - but he's a man, it was all good by today.
Just as Brian set off onto the Dunes, Marissa was all hyped-up to take Lucas' (Todd's friend, 3 year old son) quad - the thrill lasted about 5 minutes...just as soon as Lisa (Lucas' mom) secured the helmet strap (and as I made a mad dash for the camera) Marissa looked up and forward at me w/a semi amped expression and then AAHHHHAHAHA cries of help, while running into my arms to remove the helmet. Marissa said is was too heavy and a little scary (Brian was off riding, so he would have missed all the fun of seeing his daughter ride a quad!).
Later in the afternoon, Lisa actually got Marissa to ride a quad sitting on her lap, crusin' around their marked area (again, while Brian was off riding)!!!
The girls had a blast hanging out w/each other:
getting buried in the sand,
making sand castle for their Barbie's, finding sea shells, sand dollars
and chasing the waves - they're so sweet to one another, it's awesome!
We always have a good time w/Todd and Martina and thank them so much for the invite!! Their friends were so welcoming. We can't wait to go again!!!

Brian always mentions buying a boat in 5 years...but this weekend we were convinced to find some quads and an affordable RV! Craigslist - watch out!

That DOES look like fun. Jason has told me about that beach before, but I've never been there.
I have to say Marissa makes some of the best funny faces!
