Siella....

One Friday, September 23rd, after school as Marissa exited the car in our driveway she spotted an orange tiny butterfly in the grass. I was amazed that Marissa was able to place her finger beneath the butterfly and it crawled as if to say hello and thank you - it had one missing wing.

Marissa quickly brought the butterfly inside the house to show Brian and tour the house. Brian was unpacking some boxes [note the photo of our new 3D glasses] , and Marissa turned one of the inserts into a home for the butterfly - she named her Siella. Even though Sierra did not have a butterfly to house in this box, she used it temporarily as a piggy bank. That evening we decided to place Siella inside a jar with holes on the lid to keep her safe as we slept. The next morning Marissa took her out of the jar, and Siella just fluttered on Marissa leg, arm and/or foot for most of the day. Siella even sat nearby on a coaster as Marissa played computer games.

Saturday afternoon we drove to my sister's house in Hayward to celebrate Austin's 3rd birthday, and Siella sat in her jar on top of Marissa lap. Marissa excitedly showed Sedona, Arabella, Elilah and my parents the butterfly.

Sunday morning Marissa again played with Siella, she even sat with Marissa on the couch while we watched Spy Kids and asked if she could take Siella to school Monday for show and tell - "of course you can", I said. Sad news would then come later that afternoon when Marissa opened the jar to find Siella lifeless - she had died. Marissa was a mess, crying in her room for almost a half an hour. I told Marissa how fortunate Siella was to have her, that she took very good care of Siella during her last hours alive. A wingless butterfly may not have made it outdoors much longer, and at least she had Marissa as a friend.

Marissa decided to take Siella to school on Monday for show and tell despite her death, which I thought was very sweet - unfortunately, her class did not have enough time in the day to share. Maybe Santa will bring Marissa a live butterfly kit ;)
